I've been using WinXp i7 with 3gb ram with three hard drives and have never really maxed that out, I have just now only installed Win7 64bit and added 1 more stick to make 4gb ram. If I wanted to add ssd and use for OS I guess I would have to do a fresh install? You could always sell it for around the same amount as purchased for if you feel you need more power.Excellent, I only thought you could go up to 8Gb with this model not 16gb. If you already use a powerful desktop and are used to transferring Cubase files between machines then this is a decent option.

These two mods really improved the performance when compared to my MBA, and I didn't feel the need to get a Retina model at least for the moment. I also had a 128GB SSD lying around from an old computer build so I removed the Optical drive and bought the bay for a harddrive.

First thing I did was install 16GB of RAM. Yeah, I was going to ditch my 2011 13" MBAir and get a retina but my brother wanted to trade for his 2012 13" MBP as he preferred a smaller/lighter form factor. You could always sell it for around the same amount as purchased for if you feel you need more power.

But I was using a PC and had enough time using that only.

Would like a i7 and should have probably by the bullet and actually got the full blown option while I had the student discount option. I have a similar setup PC Cubase and a couple analog synths. I could have this wrong, but I think I'm not steering you astray - you'd have to check. It would be cool to have a 1 TB ATA Drive and a 1 TB SSD Drive in the same MacBook but I'm not sure what other value this choice would yield.Īny opinions are welcome!I can't say that I've used one, but if you are looking there's a wikipedia article somewhere that tells you which ones were not effected by the GPU issue and from memory it's the top of the range fastest with most memory - I just mention this because I personally would consider one and that's the one I would get - would be plenty powerful enough for my needs - new models don't seem to be getting so much faster with every iteration as was once the case and these still look very good to me. I'm just wondering if it's still worth getting this machine or the increased performance of a new MacBook Pro would outshine any of the upgradability. I can see some Geekbench numbers but not sure how that translates to real-world DAW performance with emphasis on heavy VI use.

Would the mid-2014 MacBooks totally smoke this older model or perhaps the impending upgrade due later this year will make it look a dinosaur ? I believe what is upgradeable would be limited to Hard Drive, RAM and replacing the CD/DVD tray with an additional SSD but correct me if I'm wrong.Īny opinions on how the CPU power of this mid-12' MacBook would compare to the current top-of-the-line 15" MacBooks ? (the last model before Retina was introduced,) is the last MacBook users I've read that the MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.7 15" Mid-2012
